Kinda. He was an actor and had already been in several other movies, including Apocalypse Now. He was hired to be an advisor for the movie but Stanley Kubrick decided to give him the part. He didn't beat out an already hired actor.

    From wikipedia -

Initially, he was intended to be only the technical advisor.[8] Kubrick changed his mind after Ermey put together an instructional tape, in which he went on an extended tirade towards several extras, convincing Kubrick he was the right man for the role.[8] Seeking authenticity for the film, Kubrick allowed Ermey to write or edit his own dialogue and improvise on the set, a notable rarity in a Kubrick film.[9] Kubrick later indicated that Ermey was an excellent performer, often needing just two or three takes per scene, also unusual for a Kubrick film.[10]

I've worked several jobs that I don't think I was born for. But I also didn't know that.

So lets say a person is a chef and a damn good one. They went to school for it and had a great job in a fancy restaurant. Then they retired and decided to work at McDonalds part-time. Would you say that person was born to work at McDonald's?

I'm not sure whose point you're arguing. Regroup.

Harry's character started on Cheers, I think. TV used to be good.
