  • Wingnut (Tommy Tubs) taking up for Tua

You can tell this guy is on the campaign trail.

This week, a nameless coach said the following to Lindy’s Sports:

“I think Tua needs to humble himself,” the coach said. “I think he did some bad things in the bowl game that cost the team because he put himself ahead of the team. He needs to understand Alabama won national championships by playing great defense and special teams and not beating itself. In the national championship game, the quarterback play was atrocious, and some would say the play-calling, too.”

Tuberville, who joined me and Lee Shirvanian on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5 Wednesday, scoffed at the notion, saying he "hadn’t seen many like him over the years.”

“He puts the ball on the money,” Tuberville said. “He throws in and out of the pocket. He takes a licking and keeps on ticking. He’s kind of like the Energizer bunny. I like him. I like the way he runs the team. In that game - right or wrong - he looked like he was taking it all on his shoulders.”

The reason for the Tide’s - and Tua’s - woes, he said, was pretty obvious.

“The defensive line of Clemson,” he said, "there wasn’t any better.

"He was trying to hold on, and, at the last minute, trying to get it downfield. It was just one of those where he tried and tried and tried and couldn’t get it done."

Tagovailoa finished against Clemson 22 of 34 for 295 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was also sacked twice.

“You can’t say anything bad about what he did that year, even in that game,” Tuberville said. "I tell you I thought he ran that football team, and I thought he did an excellent job. Your quarterback in the key to the engine. "

The anonymous coach talked about defense as the key to Alabama winning titles, but Tuberville said it was the passing attack this past year that sparked the Tide.

“They weren’t as good on defense as they had been,” Tuberville said. "Because of Tua and those receivers they jumped out to big leads and hammered people because of him getting the ball down the field.

“You don’t see quarterbacks like him throw it down the field. Normally, it is the short passing game and spread. He’s as good a deep ball thrower as I have seen.”

“I don’t know who is driving all this stuff, but to me it’s kind of like mouse manure when you’re up to your ears in elephant doo-doo,"

“You’re ruining the game with RPOs and illegal guys downfield. And you think it should be legal. You think it’s normal. Kiss my ass.”
