This is a bit of a project I've been working on for some time now. Let me first say that it is extremely difficult to even come up with the 250 songs you deem to be the greatest of all time, much less to order them. I'm sure that no one will agree totally with the list, and that's OK. Criticism is fine, but please refrain from bashing the list on the premise of making it.
I will release one song each day counting down from #250 to #1, and if I miss a day, I'll simply do two the next day or if I miss two days, three the next time, and so on.
I've tried very hard to use a variety of genres and decades. Both the selection and rankings were based on a combination of personal preference and unbiased recognizance of which songs are "great": those that have lasted through the years, those that had great influence, etc. A song being higher on the list doesn't necessarily mean I like it better, but it means I think it is "greater" than those beneath it.
Let me know what you think and feel free to comment on each song as they are posted.

#250: "Centerfold" - J. Geils Band
From the album Freeze Frame
Why It's Here: A fun song about a guy who sees his high school crush years later in a dirty magazine. It was a huge hit, and it still gets a lot of airtime on classic rock stations today. A song that well represents the musical culture of the 80's.
Best Lyrics:
It's okay I understand This ain't no never never land I hope that when this issue's gone I'll see you when your clothes are on

250 days is kinda dragging it out. I think it would be more exciting if you listed 15 or so a day until you got down to top 100, then listed 10 a day, until you get down to 25 then release one a day. Just something to consider...

Probably. That's part of the fun. You guys get to talk about how terrible my taste in music is.

After my top 5 or 10 songs, it gets fuzzy. Good luck doing 250.
It was tough.

I thought about that, but I like the idea of a daily countdown better.

#249: "Wagon Wheel" - Bob Dylan/Old Crow Medicine Show
From the movie Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and the album O.C.M.S.
Why It's Here: A folky song originally sketched by Bob Dylan and later popularized by Old Crow Medicine Show (Both versions above), "Wagon Wheel" is catchy and melodic.
Best Lyrics:
Headed down south to the land of the pines And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline Starin' up the road Pray to God I see headlights

So you're either saying that it's number one or not on the list?

You misread his quote. He said "if Stairway to Heaven or Free Bird is number one". Obviously both are on the list. But he'll have to wait 247 days (then 249) to find out what number one is.

#248: "Viva La Vida" - Coldplay
From the album Viva La Vida
Why It's Here: Winner of Song of the Year at the 09 Grammys, this song features arguably the best lyrics found in anything by Coldplay. The orchestra behind Chris Martin's voice results in a majestic sound that goes well with the mention of kings, castles, and ruling the world.
Best Lyrics:
I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning I sweep alone Sweep the streets I used to own

#247: "Welcome Home" - Coheed and Cambria
From the album Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
Why It's Here: One of the best alternative songs of the last decade, this prog rock masterpiece features epic vocals from singer Claudio Sanchez.
Best Lyrics:
Hang on to the glory at my right hand Here laid to rest is our love ever longed With truth on the shores of compassion You seem to take premise to all of these songs
